Much of what we fix here is underground. Older Rancho Cucamonga homes often have no sewer cleanout, and tree roots get into the older sewer lines. Below are two real jobs, one in Etiwanda and one in Alta Loma, and what they show about older lines.

Cleanouts

Do Older Rancho Cucamonga Homes Have Sewer Cleanouts?

Often they don't. Homes from the 1950s and 60s commonly have no cleanouts, and we see a lot of them in the older parts of Rancho Cucamonga, as well as in Upland and Claremont.

A cleanout is the access point for a snake or a jetter. Without one, the options are to pull a toilet or to try the roof vent. Pulling a toilet on a backed-up house lets the sewage rush out at the flange, and many roof vents have hard 90-degree bends that a cable can barely get through.

Adding a cleanout typically costs $850 to upwards of $4,000, depending on where it goes and the size of the pipe. More on drain cleaning in Rancho Cucamonga.

On the Job

What Happened on the Etiwanda Kitchen Line Job?

A clogged kitchen sink turned out to be a rotted line. The house is an older home in Etiwanda, next to Etiwanda High School, and it had no cleanouts. So we went in from the roof and hydrojetted the kitchen line, and dirt came up into the sink. That told us the pipe had rotted away completely.

We replaced the kitchen line, jackhammering and trenching about 30 feet through the middle of the kitchen to the nearest bathroom, and tied into the branch line there. When we opened the branch line, it was full of dirt too, and it started breaking apart when we jetted it.

The house was also on a septic tank that had not been pumped in 30 years. It was filled to the brim with three decades of crust, which had to be broken up and pumped out.

On the Job

Can a Tree Root Crush a Sewer Line?

Yes. On a job in Alta Loma, in northern Rancho Cucamonga above the 210, a eucalyptus root grew along the outside of an ABS sewer line for about 60 feet. It never got inside the pipe. It squeezed the line flat and folded it in half from the outside.

That was unusual, because roots rarely get into ABS with glued joints. The depth made it a big job: the sewer ran from 3 feet deep down to 9 feet, and we trenched across the whole yard with a 4-ton excavator. Depth, location and soil are what drive the price of a sewer job. Our sewer line repair page covers the options.

Roots

Do Roots Come Back After You Clear Them?

Yes, in about 6 months. Roots are the most common cause of clogged main lines, and any yard with a tree can have them. In older clay lines, they get in at the banded joints.

Hydrojetting cuts them out and gets you flowing again, but it is a band-aid. Lining the sewer or replacing it is the only permanent fix. An annual camera inspection catches roots before they cause a backup; here is why we recommend a yearly sewer camera inspection.
