Water Everywhere?

What Should I Do First When a Pipe Bursts?

Shut off the main water valve for the whole house, then go outside and open the hose bibs. That takes the pressure off the lines and lets the water in the pipes drain outside instead of into your home. A pipe that breaks under full pressure can flood a house in minutes, so those two steps matter more than anything else. Then call us; if you can't find the shutoff, we'll talk you to it over the phone.

What We Cover

Services We Provide

Emergency Response

We typically arrive within 30 minutes to an hour and can make the repair that night.

Pipe Repair

On copper, we cut out the bad section and press in a repair without waiting for the whole system to drain.

Pressure Checks

We check your water pressure on our calls, because pressure that runs too high can end in a burst line.

How We Work

Why Choose Regal?

Free Camera After We Clear It

On a drain call we cable the line first, then we typically run a camera through it free of charge as a courtesy, so you can see why it backed up.

Shielded Bands, Not Rubber

On sewer repairs we typically use a heavy-duty Husky band with a full metal shield, not the rubber Fernco band held on by two hose clamps.

30 Minutes to an Hour on Emergencies

A real person answers around the clock, and we can typically reach an emergency call within 30 minutes to an hour.

1-Year Warranty on Labor

Our labor comes with a 1-year warranty. Anything we note on your invoice as not covered by warranty isn't included.

Response Time

How Fast Can You Get Here for a Burst Pipe?

For an emergency, we typically arrive within 30 minutes to an hour. When you call, the first thing we do is help you get the water shut off.

Once the water is off, you have a choice. We can fix it that same night, or put you first on the schedule the next morning. See our 24/7 emergency plumbing service for the other calls we handle around the clock.

The Repair

How Do You Repair a Burst Pipe?

On copper, we cut out the damaged section and press a repair in with a ProPress tool. The repair is done in minutes, with no wait for the whole system to drain first.

We also see a lot of do-it-yourself repairs made with the wrong materials or the wrong method, and those tend to leak again later. If the pipe keeps failing, our pipe repair and repiping page covers the longer-term fixes.

Real Damage

Can High Water Pressure Make a Pipe Burst?

Yes. One customer put off replacing his pressure regulator, and a week later a toilet supply line burst and did more than $150,000 in damage. We tell the full story on our water pressure regulator page.

High pressure also wears pipe out from the inside, where fast water tumbles at every elbow and fitting. Replacing a typical 3/4-inch or 1-inch regulator runs $400 to $900, and regulators usually last 5 to 10 years. Two signs your pressure may be too high: you love your water pressure, or you hear water hammer when a valve shuts.

Pipe Material

Does the Type of Pipe Matter?

It can. CPVC is not a pipe we like to see. One memorable call was a CPVC line in the attic of a townhouse. It flooded the townhouse from top to bottom and started flooding the neighbor's unit too, and of course it happened on a Friday after 5 PM.

Under the Slab

What If the Burst Pipe Is Under the Slab?

Usually we reroute it rather than break up the floor. We run a new PEX line up and over through the attic, or through the crawl space if the house has one. A reroute generally runs $3,000 to $5,000.

When the plumbing system as a whole is wearing out, a whole-house repipe typically runs $10,000 to $20,000. Our slab leak detection page explains how we find the line that failed.

Insurance

Does Insurance Cover a Burst Pipe?

The water damage is typically covered. Insurers usually also pay to open up the drywall or floor to reach the pipe and to put it back, including texture and paint, but not the new pipe itself.

Timing matters. Insurers don't like a leak that someone knew about and left alone, and they can deny the claim as neglect. If you suspect a leak, have it handled right away.

Prevention

How Often Should Washing Machine Hoses Be Replaced?

Every 5 to 7 years. Hoses last longer when the water is softened and the pressure stays below 80 PSI; high pressure and untreated water shorten their life a lot.

Steel braided hoses last a little longer than rubber, but not by much. When we replace the hoses, we recommend replacing the laundry shutoff valves too, because they often won't shut off all the way.

For the whole house, a smart water shutoff such as the Moen Flo can detect a burst and turn off the water on its own.
